The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the launch of the VIPR Program.  The VIPR program consists of Sheriff’s Citizens Academy graduates who have volunteered to complete the VIPR training program. The program trains them for duties they will be responsible for and how to accomplish them.

The program consists of 20 hours of classroom training and 24 hours of FTO (Field Training Officer) ride along training.  VIPR unit duties include assisting with residential and commercial security checks, residential speed analysis, and assisting with traffic/parking control at special events.   The VIPR unit is equipped with radio communications to notify dispatchers of law enforcement situations.  Anyone who is interested in learning more about the VIPR program please contact the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Community Services Unit.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is requesting assistance in identifying the person(s) responsible for several storage unit thefts.  There have been approximately ten B&E’s of storage facilities in New Hanover County, in which multiple storage units have been entered and property stolen.  There have also been similar incidents reported in surrounding jurisdictions.  Storage unit renters are encouraged to secure their units with heavy duty “disc” style locks, as these seem to be the most difficult to defeat.  Anyone with any information regarding who may be responsible for these crimes or who can identify the individuals in these images is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (910)798-4260 or (910)798-4200.

Late Tuesday night, a tip was received that a subject who previously worked for Cape Fear Pick and Pull was planning on stealing automobile parts. The information received stated that the subject would probably be on foot. Multiple K-9 units set up focus patrol in and around the business. The manager of the business granted access for Deputies to be on the property and inside the gated area to patrol on foot. While patrolling the area Deputies identified the suspect, Toby Michael Smith, a 40 year old white male at a building inside the fenced in area. The building is a storage unit for multiple automobile parts. The suspect was found in possession of burglary tools as well as multiple automobile parts. The manager identified the automobile parts belonging to the business. The fence surrounding the property was damaged in addition to misplaced items in the building. Smith is believed to be a possible suspect in other larceny cases in the area and the investigation is ongoing at this time.

NHSO Detectives Need Your Help

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is requesting assistance in identifying the male subject in the photos attached.  The photos were taken from Scotchman store located at Market and Kerr Ave.  The black male shown in the video is a suspect for discharging firearms into occupied property that occurred in the 4500 block of N. College Rd. as well as two similar cases which occurred on I-140.  If anyone can identify this suspect please contact the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office at 798-4260 or 798-4200.
